Our vehicle was fine, but Glen - the rep working the desk at the Holiday Inn in Waikiki - has TERRIBLE customer service skills. Based on our interaction with him, we were tempted to forget the whole thing and walk away. No spirit of Aloha from Glen.
I made a reservation well in advance at the proper location, arrived just before they opened, was the second in line and was greeted with a friendly smile and helped within minutes. Vehicle was exactly what I requested and in great condition. I was diligent about trying not to make a mess of the interior considering the mud and sand that could easily be tracked in given the climate and geography. Dollar reps were courteous at drop off offering me a ride back to my hotel via their shuttle.
Some helpful advice for fellow travelers - 1) Reserve in advance 2) Double check the location you are renting from to avoid confusion 3) Get there as early a possible to pick up your car... while it might be inconvenient for you, you may possibly get a better selection of cars to choose from. It is a small lot operation (not like an airport counter) with less cars in their fleet. 4) Yes you are paying for the rental...but treat the car like it was a friend's... don't trash it.
Nice staff, but long wait. Car was still dirty. Definitely go through your hotel for a rental, way cheaper.

- forgot my cellphone in the first car. noticed after 30 minutes and went back to the shop. they said they could not look for it until the next day. Sunday they told me the same thing, then Monday they said they could not find the car and finally on Tuesday they told me it was lost. I have GPS track the last usage location was at their shop.
This place operates out of a tiny shack but seems to do quite a lot of business. I received a free upgrade because by the afternoon all of the smaller cars were (and often are) taken. Compared with my experiences on the mainland, this location was very lax about nicks and dings on the cars. Service was friendly, helpful. Perhaps the only negative in my experience was having to wait in a long line during the heat of the day.
