Great trail. Challenging hike as it's all uphill, up a railroad track. Parts of it you would need to cross a railroad track in the air which was difficult, but the view at the top is worth it. The top is amazing with a great view of the bay, mountain line, and ocean.
It definitely sucks going up, but the views up top are worth it. Bring water!! This hike is not stroller friendly at all, so bring a baby carrier if you don't mind how steep it gets. The stairs (tracks) get pretty steep, especially when you're nearing the top. The trail doesn't offer much shade at all, so bring sunscreen or some type of cover. You don't have to be super fit to get up here. Once you take your time, it'll be fine.
Yeah ok so it's doable without runners but I'd highly suggest them. Take your time if you're not one of those "I can run up a mountain in 20 minutes" type people. I started quick and got a little dizzy from the elevation change but persistence is key and go at your pace because the view at the summit is worth it. And for the adventurous, there's more to see when you get there. You'll find it.
Pepper your Angus for this one, folks. It's a little rough. Basically the stairs seem to go on forever, and they get steeper and steeper. I recommend not going on a weekend if you can help it because you will encounter annoying "traffic jams" on the way up and down. It's worth doing though. You feel like you accomplished something afterwards.
Awesome sunrise hike! But it is a real workout!! Make sure to take a headlamp (or flashlight) if you go for the sunrise. It takes approximately an hour to get to the top from the bottom of the tracks. Be prepared for crowds and two-way hikers when you leave after sunrise. Great views of the island. Highly recommended!!!
