What a difference!!!
Today the park is a open city park with canopy trees, a skate park, a play court and some children play equipment. A few blocks away, the Beretania-Smith Park is more pleasant.
Lots of homeless people live here. The city can't or won't solve the homeless problem. What happens is large amounts of homeless will set up camp in a local park that is not popular with tourists. Once the tent city gets out of hand, outrage from the community will force the police to take action. What they do is, they seize all the belongings of the homeless people and generally harass them until they all pack up and move on. Problem is, there's no where for them to go, so eventually they will all wind up moving to another park down the road to set up their tents. And the cycle continues.
Not the best place to be. Lots of vagrants roaming around. Not safe during the day or night time. Proceed with caution
I once read in a book about Chinatown that Aala Park was once a housing slum. But it is street fronted with 3 to 4 story store front, similar to what you see on King Street portion of Chinatown today.
Considering the history of A'ala Park, it is certainly on its way to returning to the majesty of the Royals.
Two years ago, the homeless, drug dealers, and alcoholics had overrun the park. When I went there two days ago, there were only four people in the park, no shopping carts and tents, the trash was picked up, and it was peaceful. My friend and I sat on a bench and talked for a great length of time...relaxed, laughing, and the environment was peaceful!
Parking free, skate park, and playground but crazy activity going on publicly...nice big tree, grassy area restroom.
