The state capitol we have was designed with modern design vocabulary. It is a deviation from the transitional neoclassical capitol that you see in other states. The pond, the open roof, the cone shape chambers, the number of columns, even the number trees are all specific symbolism suggested by the architects.
1. The building is surrounded by a reflecting pool, symbolizing the Pacific Ocean. (text from Wikipedia) My feeling: The two legislative chambers are underground and underwater. Both has the connotation of being buried (underground) or drowning (below water). I never feel comfortable watching our legislators working their heart out in the chambers under water, in a windowless chambers. I feel suffocated.
I love the open air middle gathering place. I love (and hate) how the middle open to the sky. I love the floor tile art in the atrium court. It is a very interesting building. But I do have my complains about the symbolism of our State Capitol:
Design building is not an easy task. So this is my feeling with my visit to the state Capitol. There are sure someone out there that can make the building more comfortable.
Great architecture.
2. The Capitol is built with an open-air design, allowing sun, wind, and rain to enter; the central atrium opens to the sky and rainbows can sometimes be seen inside the building when it rains. (text from Wikipedia) My feeling: The capitol is "broken" without a proper roof to protect the inhabitant. The missing of comfort overpower the feeling of openness.
