This former battery is a another area included in the historic areas on Oahu. One can walk through the battery and there are dioramas and artifacts spanning the history of the islands, the effects of the invasion of Pearl Harbor, Wheeler airfield, and Hickam Air Force Base. It spans up through the Vietnam war and has a historic section dedicated to retired general Eric Shinseki, Hawaii's most famous general. There's a few pieces of old military equipment outside and on the south side there's Fort Derussy military recreation park, right on the beach. It's a pretty cool little place that's rich in history. I'd recommend stopping by.
This army museum used to be a Fort used to defend the coastal. It was equipped with 2 12inch ingeniously designed 'disappearing gun' which hides after firing a shot/during reloading of gunpowder and projectile. Free admission. Recommended if you are into military stuff. Read some stories about the decorated soldiers on 2nd floor. There is also a cobra attack helicopter in exhibit on 2nd floor. Due to the well built structure, the demolition was abandoned and it was redeveloped into a museum.
Very cool museum to pass a rainy or cold day in Waikiki. We were staying near this museum and knew our son would love it. He is 4, so we were able to stay for about 1 hour and hold his interest. Expect it to take longer if reading and participating in everything, maybe 2-2.5! All signs are are easy to read. It was free for us, but we are military so I am not sure if there are entrance fees. The military history of Hawaii and Pacific region is something everyone should learn a bit about. Highly interesting and wonderful museum. Wheelchair and Stroller friendly!
Very interesting place to visit if you have an interest in US military history. Fabulous exhibits, very well maintained. Worth taking least two to three hours to have a good look - even longer of you have the time.
I'm not immensely interested in military/war topics, but it was a cool museum. Seeing the missiles and guns, and the handheld guns and traditional Hawaiian weapons was great. I learnt a lot about American-Japanese relationships, all the wars Hawaii has been directly involved in. My favourite part was about Eric K. Shinseko (might be spelling that wrong) about his progression from a soldier to a general and his time in the army - very thought provoking! The second floor showcasing Hawaiian citizens awarded military medals was also very sad, but very rewarding.
