We thank the Honolulu Fire Department for all they do for our island, they are much loved.
There are 42 fire stations on the island of Oahu.
This is the VERY FIRST headquarters building the Honolulu Fire Department has ever had since it was founded in 1851. Before it was finished in 2006, the HFD had to lease office space in buildings that were not city owned. Inside is the office of the Fire Chief and all Administrative Chiefs, as well as Community Relations, Planning, etc. It was a much needed facility as the Dept's Bureaus were using offices scattered throughout various city buildings previously. It is done in an architectual style meant to take one back to the earlier days in Hawaii. It may appear grandiose to a first time observer, but no more so than the very large Honolulu Police Department headquarters building on Beretania St.
We're not quite sure why the need for such grandiose. You don't put out fires in this building. Next to this is the Kakaako Fire Station where the real firefighting action is. Anyways, do drop in and look around.
You should visit this opulent corporate-like headquarter of this Fire Department Headquarters. As a tax-payer, I'll be curious to see the cost to build this baby.
